Staff Sergeant Paul Allen Gregg, known to many as “Dusty” was born on January 6, 1915 in Arcola, IL, a son of William Riley and Laura (Mansfield) Gregg. He lived in Garrett, IL and attended Atwood High School, where he was a captain and a standout player on the football team. Throughout high school Paul worked at various restaurants in Arthur, IL before being drafted into the United States Army in 1941, marking the beginning of his military service.
In September 1943, Paul was deployed overseas for combat duty. He spent several months in England preparing for the challenges ahead. In 1944, he participated in the invasion of France as a member of Company H, 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. His bravery and commitment were evident as a combat infantryman.
Tragically, Paul was reported missing in action on December 18, 1944, in the vicinity of Fouhren, Luxembourg. Many years later, on May 29, 2025, his remains were identified.
Paul is survived by a nephew, Tom Spencer of Carlock, IL, and many great nieces and great nephews.
His family consisted of his parents, and six siblings, Marie Sanders, Thelma Christiansen, Raymond Gregg, Oliver Gregg, Edwin Gregg, and Freda Spencer.
A Graveside funeral service with Army Funeral Honors will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 11, 2026 in the Arcola Township Cemetery. Chaplin Monte Bowers will officiate. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting the family.
