Richard Edelen Stewart, 94 of Mattoon, IL passed away at 7:41 AM on Sunday, March 29, 2026 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 320 North 21st St., Mattoon, IL. Father John Titus will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at the IC Parish Center across the street from the church. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Richard was born on January 11, 1932 in Mattoon, IL. He was a son of Roy George Stewart and Marion Boyle.
He is survived by seven children, Heather Eller and her husband Larry of St. Joseph, MO, Cathy King and her husband Robert, of Pittsboro, IN, Wes Stewart of Mattoon, IL, Lisa Schultz and her husband David of St. Joseph, MO, Brenda Doorley and her husband Bob of St. Joseph, MO, Dawn Wilson and her husband Johnnie of Greenwood, IN, and Mary Watson and her husband Dwayne of Indianapolis, IN. He was a grandfather, a great grandfather, and a great great grandfather. He is also survived by one sister, Page Koning of Mt. Zion, IL
He was preceded in death by his parents, and four siblings, an infant brother, Robert Stewart, Patricia Chronic, Madonna Fuller, and R. G. Stewart.
Richard graduated from Mattoon High School in 1949. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mattoon.
He retired after 32 years of service at Western Electric in Indianapolis, IN.
Throughout his life, Richard enjoyed gardening. He was also an avid horseman, breeding and raising horses. He enjoyed camping and trail riding. Richard also served on the Marion County, Indiana Sheriff’s horse patrol.
