Linda Lou (Brotherton) Coverstone, age 92, was called home to be with the Lord on April 17, 2026, while holding her daughter’s hand at Heartland Senior Living Center in Neoga. Born November 17, 1933, in Mattoon, Linda was the daughter of Harold and Lois (Icenogle) Brotherton. She married Ralph Coverstone on November 23, 1952. Together, they celebrated nearly 55 years of marriage before Ralph’s passing on October 23, 2007. Ralph and Linda raised two children, Matt (Tina) Coverstone and Cathy (Rodney) Morris.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, Linda was proceeded in death by her parents, Harold Brotherton and Lois (Brotherton) Stull; son, Matt (Tina) Coverstone who passed just two weeks prior; sister, Rosetta (Brotherton) Hilgenberg; and, her infant brother, Eugene. Linda is survived by her daughter, Cathy (Rodney) Morris of Lerna, IL; daughter in law, Tina Coverstone, of Mattoon, IL; five grandsons – Derrick (Brooke) Jeske of Olathe, KS; Clint Jeske and his fiancé, Mandy, of Sullivan, IL; Ross (Melissa) Jeske of Lakeland, FL; Cody (Maddie) Morris of Seymour, IL; and, Myles (Sara ) Coverstone of Mattoon, IL; two granddaughters, Cindy (Chris) Hanlon of Mapleton, IL and Kylie (Josh) Farmer of Mattoon, IL; 17 Great Grandchildren and five nieces and nephews.
Linda started her career working at Rainbow Gardens in Mattoon and later worked at First National Bank in Mattoon. Ralph and Linda would move to Fort Knox, KY while Ralph served in the US Army. After Ralph’s service, they returned to Mason, IL where Ralph worked on the railroad and they operated a small farm and had an egg route. Ralph and Linda would later move to Mattoon and worked along side Linda’s father at Brotherton’s Greenhouse on North 19th Street. In 1952, they began working at Icenogle’s Grocery with Linda’s mother and Uncle. Ralph and Linda would later purchase the business and include Matt, Cathy, Tina, and several other members of the family in the store. Ralph and Linda operated Icenogle’s Grocery for 34 years until their retirement and closing the store in 1996.
Linda cherished time with Ralph and their children and their families and grandchildren. Family activities included Boating, Camping, Fairs, and attending many sporting events and other activities with their grandchildren.
Ralph and Linda enjoyed gardening, flowers, and raising produce to deliver to family, friends, and neighbors. Ralph and Linda spent many hours watching Illinois and Big Ten Basketball, Baseball, and numerous Western shows. They also enjoyed spending time with many friends at the campground, attending special events such as the Indianapolis 500 and Country music shows, and vacationing. After Ralph’s passing, Linda would find entertainment in watching Hallmark movies and numerous game shows on TV. In her younger years, Linda enjoyed spending time with her sister and participating in the Rainbow Riding Club.
Linda requested no visitation. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. Linda’s final place of rest will be next to Ralph in Janesville cemetery. Linda was a member of First Baptist Church in Mattoon. When Linda was no longer able to attend, she would watch their church service on TV.
