It is with great sorrow, but also profound love and appreciation for having had her in our lives, that we announce the passing of our mother, Dorothy Maxine (Scheffer) Jurgens, on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 100 years of age, at Carriage Crossing Senior Living in Arcola, IL. She was a longtime resident of rural Arthur, IL.

Private graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026 in the Mackville Cemetery in Atwood, IL. Danny Powell will officiate. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Dorothy Maxine was born on November 14, 1925, in Piatt County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Max and Leona (Jones) Scheffer. She married Eugene Edward “Yukor” Jurgens on April 23, 1944, at the Zion United Church of Christ. He passed away on March 26, 2003.

Above all, Dorothy Maxine cherished her family. She was devoted to giving the best life that she could to her children & grandchildren. She bestowed wisdom, care and optimism on all her loved ones with both her words & actions. Dorothy Maxine was truly the “Matriarch” of the family.

Left to cherish Dorothy Maxine’s love and legacy is son Michael Jurgens and his wife Connie of Springfield, IL, two daughters, Gaye Powell and her husband Danny of Arthur, IL, and Kelli Barnett and her husband Terry of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Kirk Jurgens (Julie) of Lovington, IL, Kristen Jurgens of Springfield, IL, Matthew Jurgens of Rochester, IL, Griffith Jurgens of Honolulu, HI, Kara Butler (James) of Farmer City, IL, Joseph Powell of Decatur, IL, Adam Barnett (Kalee) of Rockford, IL, Jack Barnett (Virginia) of Rockford, IL and Katie Tchabo (James) of Manassas, VA; 8 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Maxine is preceded in death by her husband, parents, stepmother Costella, two brothers, William “Bill” Scheffer and Robert “Bob” Scheffer. She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ.

The family would like to thank the many kind and compassionate caregivers that have helped our mother the past 11 years while residing at Eberhardt Village and Carriage Crossing Senior Living. We are especially grateful to those who have cared for her the past few months at Carriage Crossing and Transitions Care Hospice.
