Charles Robert "Bob" Smeathers

Charles Robert “Bob” Smeathers, 75, of Atwood, IL passed away at 9:28 AM on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 after a hard fought battle with cancer.  Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Bob managed his illness with strength and grace, and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was surrounded by his family, who he loved more than anything in the world.

Bob was born on December 9, 1947, in Maceo, Kentucky.  He was a son of Moorman and Betty (Reel) Smeathers.  He married Frances Lindstrom on February 6, 1970.  Out of their 21 year union came their children, Tony (Tonya) Smeathers, Karen (Tim) Conner, and Kristyn Smeathers (Derek Leatherwood).

In addition to his children, he is survived by his grandchildren, Waylon and Kasen Smeathers, Brittany Harshbarger, Nick and Regan Stoltey, Wyatt and Amelia Shonkwiler, Elliott Norfleet, Zane Manship and Macen Sisk; six great-grandchildren and four sisters, Yvonne Manus, Linda Smith, Judy Hutchens, and Teresa Wolf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Larry Brooks, and three sisters, Wanda Doty, Ruby King, and Shirley Smiley.

Bob didn’t have the opportunity for much formal education.  He worked many jobs at an early age. He enjoyed farming as well as mechanic and auto body work.   His work ethic and desire to take care of his family led him to take a job at Caterpillar in 1973 which is where he worked until retirement.  He then spent several years working in the Amish Community as a driver.

Bob will forever be remembered for his great sense of humor. To know him was to love him.

Private family graveside services will be held in the Arcola Cemetery. Danny Powell will officiate.  The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
