Biography

BETTY SHAFFER, 83 of Arcola, IL, formerly of Oakland, IL, passed away at 1:10 P.M. on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in the Harmony Center in Mattoon, IL.

A funeral service will be held at 12:30 P.M. on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the Edwards Funeral Home in Arcola, IL. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, December 7, 2013 prior to the funeral. Rev. Dale Tomas will officiate. Burial will be in the Embarrass Cemetery north of Redmon, IL.

Betty was born on March 7, 1930 in Oakland, IL. She was a daughter to Elmer L. and Lula Faye (Dorris) Hallowell, Sr. She was raised primarily in the Oakland area. On January 22, 1948, she married Cecil E. Shaffer. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1990.

Survivors include three daughters and one son; Janet Richardson of Oakland, IL, Linda Diane Cole and her husband Terry of Charleston, IL, Tammy McCracken of Arcola, IL, and Brian Shaffer of Greenup, IL; Also surviving is one sister, Mildred Davis of Charleston, IL, nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Cecil, her son Eugene, a brother Elmer “Bud” Hallowell and a sister Maxine Lovell.

Betty had worked at Brown Shoe Factory of Charleston, IL, for many years, and retired from Collegiate Cap and Gown of Arcola, IL. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Oakland, IL.

Betty loved to go camping and enjoyed feeding her squirrels and birds.
Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church in rural Oakland, IL.
